So…Where Have You Been?

I’ve been getting this question a lot lately.

I guess I’ve “checked out” a little bit for the past few months. It’s been a rough go to put it lightly.

Last year I ran for office in the small county where I live — during that time, I had a spot checked out on my upper left back only to find out that it was a tumor. Not just a little spot, but a little spot that made a lot of noise. Long story short, two surgeries and a chunk of flesh taken out of my back, in the surgeons words, “about the size of a New York strip steak”, honestly, I can without a doubt say that I’ve had better steaks! I also ended up with a nice and very aggravating scar under my left arm pit where my lymph nodes once resided. This particular scar is healing very slowly due to the constant rubbing from my arm movement. The other scar, starts at my upper left spine and slices directly to my shoulder and slightly down my left arm. It seems to be healing well.

Why did I mention that ran for office? In the midst of what we thought and still believe was a master class on running a great campaign, this all came raining down on me. Shortly after my surgery, I found myself canvassing in a small town in the county and literally sitting down on the curb and calling my wife to say, “I can’t make it back to my car — can you come pick me up?” My well balanced life had been put into a tailspin. As a very healthy eater, avid runner and hiker, I was completely out of my element with a month left in my campaign.

I plan to fill in more details with future writings, but I’ll leave you with this: I’ve been poked and prodded so many times that I feel like a pin cushion — I hate it…but I’ve also experience the greatest in humanity when other cancer patients that are much worse off than me and probably not long for this world, go out of their way to ask me how I’m doing. It’s hard to hold back my emotions just writing those words.

I’m fighting my way back to the world but could use your positive thoughts and energy…

Did I mention that I also got Covid-19 in January? Why not!? Let’s keep this interesting…

And by the way…didn’t win the election. Maybe a good thing…

More later….
